James Dunn (1905 - 1967)
James worked in vaudeville and as an extra in silent
films untilhe was signed by Fox in 1931. James Dunn
appeared with Shirley Temple in her first three
movies but in 1935 musicals were out and Dunn's
careers would never really recover and by the late
1930's his alcoholism made him unemployable.
James Dunn had been offscreen for several years
before getting the part as Jimmy Nolan in "A
Tree Grows in Brooklyn" in 1945. The Oscar
didn't do much for his career though he did get
work in television and did appear in many westerns
in the dusk of his career. James Dunn was also marriedto
starlett, Frances Gifford, in the late 30's (divorced
in 1942).
