Chris Cooper (1951 - )
Chris Cooper had two majors at the University of
Missouri, Agriculture and Acting, which are two
areas of study which helped to further his future
career as a supporting actor. He also studied ballet
at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.
Cooper started his career on the stage, appearing
on Broadway in such productions as OF THE FIELDS
LATELY in 1980, and also appeared in off-Broadway
productions such as A DIFFERENT MOON.
In Chris Cooper's first film job in MATEWAN ('87),
his performance was appreciated by the critics though
the film itself bombed.
He landed TV work in the mini-series, LONESOME
DOVE ('89), and the sequel, RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE
('93). Chris Cooper continued to be in various TV
movies as well as winning parts in films regularly,
making a good living throughout the 1990's.
In 1998, Chris Cooper gave a strong performance
in THE HORSE WHISPERER (1998).
In 1999, Chris Cooper gave another memorable supporting
actor performance in AMERICAN BEAUTY as Col. Frank
Fitts, USMC.
In the following years, Chris Cooper entertained
the film going public in some diverse character
roles. Cooper held his own and showed his versatility
in the comedy, ME, MYSELF & IRENE, 2000. Cooper
played a hard-nosed villain in THE BOURNE IDENTITY (2002). However, Cooper hit the jackpot with his
performance in ADAPTATION (2002), winning the Oscar.
Chris Cooper is married to Marianne Leone and they
have one son, born in 1987. They live in Kingston,
Massachusetts.
