Rory Calhoun was born on August 8, 1922 in Los Angeles, California, His given birth name was Francis Timothy McCown. He was sometimes credited as Frank McGown. His nickname was Smoky.

On April 28, 1999, Rory Calhoun died in Burbank, California of emphysema and diabetes.

Rory Calhoun dropped out of high school and became a drifter. He spent three years in a federal reformatory of stealing a car.

Lita Baron married Rory Calhoun in 1948 but were later divorced in 1970. They had three daughters named Cindy, Tami and Lorri. Lita Baron starred in The Broken Star in 1956. When Lita Baron sued for divorce, she named 79 women with whom Rory Calhoun had commited adultery. Calhoun's response was that she only included half of the women.
