About Rita Moreno (1931 - )

Puerto Rican born actress-dancer, with stage experience who's real name was Rosita Dolores Alverio. Rita Moreno was just 17 when she did her first movie role. 

In 1952, Moreno played in the classic musical comedy, SINGING IN THE RAIN, with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.

In 1960, Moreno played the vengeful Puerto Ricania Rita, in the Leonard Bernstein musical retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story, WEST SIDE STORY, in which the two rival factions are represented by New York street gangs. Rita Moreno won the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as a girlfriend of one of the gang leaders.  Moreno also played this role on stage in regional repertory.

From 1971 to 1977, Rita Moreno was a regular on the children's education television program, THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, racking up an amazing 780 episodes, along with co-star Morgan Freeman. 

In the television series, OZ, about an unusual prison, Moreno played in 55 episodes as Sister Peter Marie Reimondo, from 1997 - 2003.

Rita Moreno continues to play character roles in televisions series and movies.
