Linda Hunt was born in New Jersey and raised in Connecticut, the daughter of a piano teacher and an oil executive. She trained as an actor in Chicago at the Goodman School of Drama.

Linda Hunt began her film career when she played Mrs. Oxheart in Robert Altman's Popeye (1980).
