Kim Basinger (1953- )
Born Kimila Ann Basinger on December 8, 1953 in Athens,
Georgia, she is the third of five children heir to
a family of entertainers. Kim’s own father was a big-band
member and her mother was a water ballerina starring
in many of Esther Williams’ films. Taking after her
mother, Kim began ballet lessons at the tender age
of three and continued on up through her high school
years. It seems ballet may have served a dual purpose
for Basinger however; helping her to, not only refine
her love of dance, but also to overcome her severe
shyness as a child. In fact, Basinger’s timid nature
has followed her through her formative years; it is
common knowledge that she has occasionally suffered
from severe attacks of agoraphobia.
Nevertheless this beautiful woman has slowly emerged
as a top-notch actress in Hollywood after years of
Athen’s Junior Miss and Georgia Miss beauty pageants,
modeling for Ford Modeling Agency, and appearing as
the Breck Shampoo girl. After all was said and done,
Kim Basinger had a love for acting and began taking
classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York,
whereby she demonstrated her talent onstage via, appropriately
enough, the pseudonym Chelsea. In 1976 Basinger moved
to LA to try her luck at Hollywood’s silver screen.
The rest has been a history of movie credentials most
actresses would give their left arm for.
Beginning with her television stints in 1976’s “Charlie’s
Angels” and a short-lived marriage to Ron Snyder-Britton,
Kim began to pave a road of self-made stardom. Her
first major role for the big screen was as a Bond
girl in 1983’s “Never Say Never Again”. She would
go on to play significant roles in films like 1987’s
“Nadine”. But it wasn’t until 1989 when Kim Basinger
received her breakout role as Vicki Vale in the major
motion picture “Batman”, starring opposite an A-list
cast after replacing originally cast, Sean Young.
With her career in full-swing Basinger still managed
to find love with second husband Alec Baldwin. The
two were married in 1993 and when their daughter Ireland
Eilesse was born in 1995 Kim took some time off to
raise her first child. During her first years as a
mother Kim also took time out to promote PETA (People
for Ethnical Treatment of Animals), a logical choice
for the animal-loving vegetarian.
But in 1997 Basinger was back on top with her Oscar
winning performance in the blockbuster “L.A. Confidential”.
Her next big role would be a $5,000,000 offer for
2000’s “I Dreamed of Africa”, making Basinger one
of Hollywood’s top contemporary starlets.
Though she recently separated from her husband Alec
Baldwin, she remains a dedicated mother, actress,
and most of all, humanitarian. Basinger spends her
time wisely being selective in both her role and life
choices as is evident when she states, "I feel there
are two people inside me - me and my intuition. If
I go against her, she'll screw me every time, and
if I follow her, we get along quite nicely." With
that said, it is likely we haven’t seen the best of
Miss Basinger yet.
