Karen had her film debut in 1959 with a small role in "The Prime Time". She made her Broadway debut in 1965's The Playroom, for which she was nominated for a Drama Circle Critic Award for Best Actress.
Karen received her most notoriety from her role as Karen in Easy Rider (1969).
Some of her most prominent performances can be found in such films as Jack Nicholson's directorial debut Drive He Said (1971), The Great Gatsby (1974), The Day of the Locust (1975), and Robert Altman's Nashville (1975), where she got to show off her singing ability. In 1975, she also played four roles in the chilling television thriller Trilogy of Terror.
In March 2005, Karen received the Best Actress Award at the Fantasporto International Film Festival in Porto, Portugal, for her work in the critically-acclaimed Steve Balderson film, "Firecracker" (2005), in which she plays two roles, Sandra and Eleanor. She also played two different roles in one of the three stories comprising the 1975 cult classic "Trilogy of Terror". In April 2009, Karen reunited with director Steve Balderson for "Stuck!" Karen also stars in the John Landis-produced 2010 thriller "Some Guy Who Kills People".
Throughout her career, Karen has over 100 film performances to her credit, including her role as a kidnapping accomplice in the final film Alfred Hitchcock directed, "Family Plot" (1976), and her turn as Rayette Dipesto in "Five Easy Pieces" (1970), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
