About John Rhys-Davies (1944 – )
John Rhys-Davies was born on May 5th, 1944, in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, Wales, into a Welsh family. His mother, Mary Margaretta Phyllis was a nurse, and his father, Rhys Davies was a mechanical engineer and Colonial Officer. John was exposed early in his life to classical literature, which he claimed in an interview was his source of inspiration to become an actor.

John grew up in three distinctly cultural areas: England, Africa and Wales. He went to the University of East Anglia, and founded their Drama Society. After college, John came back to England, and became a secondary school teacher in Norfolk, at Watton County Secondary School. He left this profession after winning a place at The Royal Acadamy of Dramatic Art.

John's breakthrough performance that opened many doors to his acting career was his performance in a 1976 BBC Television Series adaptation of Robert Graves's I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD. His portrayal of Praetorian officer Naevius Sutorius Macro wowed the public in England and around the world as well.

His career as a character actor has soared ever since. One source lists 234 projects that John has given his talents and energy to, creating a variety of characters that audiences love.

John married Suzanne A. D. Wilkinson in 1966. They had two sons, Tom and Ben. They separated in the early '80's but never divorced. She developed Alzheimer's in 1995, and John remained close to her until she died. John has been living with a partner, Lisa Manning, since 2004, and they have a daughter together, Maia.

John Rhys-Davies has voiced his opposition to Islamic extremism precisely because he feels that it violates the "Western values" of equality, democracy, tolerance, and the abolition of slavery.

John Rhys-Davies is best known for his roles in Raiders of the Lost Ark;(1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade; (1989).

In between the Indiana Jones films mentioned above, John has also had leading roles in VICTOR/VICTORIA; (1982), THE Living Daylights (1987) and King Solomon's Mines (1985).

John Rhys-Davies gained an audience with the younger generation as well from his portrayal of the character, Gimli, in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." One of his sons had urged him to take the role of Gimli.

The cast of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy films won many awards for the Best Ensemble Cast for their performances in these tales of adventure, bravery and honor.

John Rhys-Davies has also made good use of his wonderful deep, Welsh voice in doing a variety of narration projects; films, television, video games, and animated projects.
