About John Lone (1952 - )

On October 13, 1952, John Lone was born in Hong Kong.  His given name at birth was Leung Kwok Ng. He is sometimes credited as Zun Long.

John Lone was raised by a financially struggling single mother. At the age of seven he was sent to the Peking Opera for his education. He never saw his mother again. The Peking Opera has been known to be brutal and grueling for the children educated there. John Lone however was a diligent and tireless student. He later received a sponsorship to continue his education in the United States.

While attending Santa Ana Community College, John Lone met Nina Savino. She was an Asian-American studying drama and art. They were married in 1972 but later divorced in 1979. John Lone continued his education at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena and New York.

John Lone became part of the East/West Players. He performed in PACIFIC OVERTURES as the Lion Dancer.  He began to dance, sing, write and direct. He soon signed with the Bessie Loo Agency.

His first real break came with the Di Laurentis remake of KING KONG. He was cast as the cook.

Considered the most brillant performance of his career was in the film, ICEMAN. John Lone played his part without dialogue. The part opened up his career and made his name known in the United States.

On PBS, John Lone directed an acclaimed documentary on the Chinese Railroad Workers in America.

John Lone was voted one of the 50 most beautiful people of the year by People Magazine in 1990.

In the last ten years, John Lone spends his time between New York, China and Canada where he acts, produces and has developed a singing career.

John Lone is an intensely private man which is part of his attraction. He is fluent in several Chinese Languages but he mainly speaks Cantonese.

In 1986 and again in 1988, John Lone was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards for THE LAST EMPEROR AND YEAR OF THE DRAGON.  He was also nominated by the Independent Spirit Awards for THE MODERNS in 1989.
