Jennifer Jones was just 24 years old when she played the 19the century maid of Lourdes who claimed to see the Virgin Mary in the popular Franz Werfel novel.

Jennifer Jones was a child actress in her parents' touring stock company. Later she studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Jennifer Jones was married to producer David O. Selznick (GONE WITH THE WIND).

Jennifer Jones went to Hollywood to read for Producer David O. Selznick, instigating what would be a successful career for her, as well an eventual marriage to the producer. Her first role after signing with him, was playing the young saint in 1943 movie, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE, the true story of an asthmatic girl in Lourdes, France in 1858, whose visions of a beautiful lady are interpreted as holy visions of the Virgin Mary. Jones won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

In the 1944 war time movie, SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, Jones played a daughter in an all female household in World War II, headed by a Claudette Colbert, struggling to keep her family together during the war. It was a popular film, which brought Jones a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. In 1945, Jones played with Joseph Cotton in LOVE LETTERS, a variation on the Cyrano de Bergerac story, involving murder and amnesia.

Jones was nominated again for an Oscar for her performance in the 1946 melodrama, DUEL IN THE SUN, in which she played Pearl, the nearly grown child of an man who was executed for killing her Native American mother and her lover. Pearl and the two grown sons of the family that takes her in, embark on a long dance of lust and love.

Jones received her final Oscar nomination for her work in the 1955 drama, LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING, she plays a half Asian doctor who has a star-crossed love affair with an American reporter in Hong Kong, during the Chinese Civil War.
