About Jennifer Hudson (1981 – )
Jennifer won for her award for her performance as Effie White.
Jennifer Kate Hudson was born (September 12th, 1981) and raised in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of a bus driver, Samuel Simpson; (died in 1999), and Darnell Hudson Donerson; (died in 2008), the youngest of three children. Her grandmother, Julia Kate Hudson was a choir mistress in Chicago, and is the one that Jennifer inherited her voice from. Her powerful gift of singing became apparent early, and she sang her way through her childhood and youth in Baptist choirs, school choirs, and sang and acted in community theatre. She graduated in 1999 from Dunbar Vocational Career Academy. She sang on cruise ships, and went on tour for Disney's show, Hercules: The Musical.
She first got national exposure on the third season of American Idol, at the age of 23, and did some great performances. Jennifer wound up finishing in 7th place, falling a little short of the glory and fame. She did however get a spot on the American Idol Summer Tour, which led to concerts for the following two years, which gave her more performance experience as a singer. In 2005, Jennifer won out over 782 other women to be cast in the coveted role of Effie White, in the film version of DREAMGIRLS which began shooting in January 2006.
In DREAMGIRLS, She did more than nail the acting part and songs; Jennifer won the hearts of many by combining singing and acting in her show-stopping rendition of the powerful song, AND I'M TELLING YOU THAT I'M NOT GOING.
It is no wonder that Jennifer was showered with acting and vocal awards during 2006-2007. Jennifer accomplished something few do! She is one of five actresses to win the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award and SAG Award for the same performance. Plus, Jennifer received an Academy Award Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, at the age of 25, for her screen debut performance, which is rather rare happening.
Her great success in DREAMGIRLS led to recording opportunities and some new film projects as well. In 2006, she signed a record deal with Chicago-based Arista Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment and operates under the RCA Label Group. Working with the experienced Clive Davis, was a great opportunity for Jennifer. Her resulting album, Jennifer Hudson Debut, was honored with 4 Grammy Award nominations in 2009. It will take place on Feb. 8th, 2009.
Tragedy and murder entered Jennifer's life on September 12th, 2008. Her brother-in-law who just was paroled for violent crimes, killed her mother, her older brother and her nephew, with a gun. His parole was revoked and he was arrested again and held without bail, when his new girlfriend came forward and told what she knew about the murder weapon and her boyfriend.
It is a good thing that Jennifer has her strong faith and her extended family to get her through this painful loss. The Hudson family established a foundation for families of murder victims, in honor of her brother Jason, her mother Darnell and her nephew Julian.
