James Cromwell's birth name is John Oliver Cromwell and sometimes he gets credited as Jamie Cromwell. James is the son of actress Kay Johnson and director/actor John Cromwell and step-son of actress Ruth Nelson.

In the movie STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996) James's character said to the crew, "...and you're all astronauts, on some kind of... star trek?" Cromwell is the only actor to ever utter the words "Star Trek" on STAR TREK itself. James Cromwell's character (Zefram Cochrane) is the only character to be mentioned on all five STAR TREK series.

James played a U.S. President 3 times... in THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, in The West Wing, and Lyndon Johnson in the television movie RFK.
