James Caviezel was one of five children born to Jim and Maggie Caviezel. The family was a very close knit, Catholic family.
Described at a young age as being very intense, James Caviezel's two main interests were sports and religion. James was gifted as a basketball player and had dreams of playing with the NBA. Also growing up, he learned the importance of Christianity attending church regularly with his family.
James Caviezel went to Mount Vernon High School but transferred to O'Dea High School after two years. The following spring he transferred again to Burien Kennedy High School in Seattle where he became a star basketball player.
After High School, James Caviezel enrolled at Bellevue Community College where he also played on the basketball team. James' dream of being an NBA star ceased in his sophomore year due to a foot injury. Caviezel then began to focus on acting.
James Caviezel met his wife Kerri Browitt, a school teacher, on a blind date in 1993. They have adopted a three year old Chinese Boy named BO.
James Caviezel's first role was a small part in a 1991 independent film MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO.
In 1992, James Caviezel moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a waiter in between auditions. Caviezel landed small part roles in DIGGSTOWN, WYATT EARP, THE WONDER YEARS, AND MURDER SHE WROTE.
Almost giving up on acting, Caviezel received critical recognition for his role as Private Witt in THE THIN RED LINE in 1998. He was noticed even more by the film critics the following year in the film RIDE WITH THE DEVIL.
In 2000, James Caviezel landed the role of John Sullivan in the thriller FREQUENCY, in 2000. The film was described by a movie goer as a film that struck deep and stays with you, and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
In 2001, his role as Jennifer Lopez's love interest in ANGEL EYES, established him as a versatile actor and leading man.
In 2002, James Caviezel's Christianity became known when he refused to do the love scenes with Ashley Judd in HIGH CRIMES.
Two years later, Caviezel played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. The film became one of the highest grossing films of all time and made James Caviezel a household name.
During the filming of THE PASSION OF CHRIST, Caviezel was hit by lightning. After accepting the role of Jesus Christ he realized his initials were the same as Jesus and that he was the same age as Jesus was when he died.
James Caviezel received an honorary degree from King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania at their commencement in 2003. Caviezel gave a fire and brimstone speech based on his interpretation of Catholicism.
