Jack Palance won his Supporting Oscar for portraying the tough, crusty old cowboy who leads the tenderfoots on their cattle drive.

About Jack Palance (1920 – 2006)

Jack Palance was born Volodymyr Walter Palahniuk into a Ukranian descent family on February, 18th, 1919, in the mine town of Lattimer Mines in Pennsylvania.

American leading man with stage background, Palance made a career of playing character roles in television programs and movies, beginning in 1950. He specialized in playing villains, though on occasion he got to play the protagonist.

In the 1952 film, SUDDEN FEAR, Jack played an actor with a dark, ulterior motive in romancing playwright Joan Crawford, on a trans-American train ride from New York to San Francisco. Jack was nominated for Best Actor by the Academy for his role.

The following year, Jack Palance was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, for his 1953 work as an evil gunslinger with bad attitudes in SHANE, with Alan Ladd.

In 1957, Jack won a Best Single Performance by an Actor Primetime Emmy for his 1956 performance on the series, PLAYHOUSE 90;( episode REQUIM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT). He got the starring role as the boxer, Harland "The Mountain" McClintock, who is over-the-hill in his profession, in need of help.

Many years later, in 1989, Jack Palance played a crime boss in Tim Burton's BATMAN. Also in the same year, he played another crime lord in TANGO AND CASH.

Finally, 40 years after Jack began working as a professional actor, Jack Palance won an Oscar for his performance as cowboy Curly Washburn, in the 1991 comedy City Slickers. When he went to the stage for his award, the unusually tall actor [6' 4"] man peered down at host Billy Crystal [5' 7"], and mimicked a line from the film "Billy Crystal... I crap bigger than him." He then got down on the floor and did a number of one handed pushups - at the age of 73.

Jack also won a Golden Globe and an American Comedy Award for this same performance.

Palance quipped of entertainment writing, "I'm amazed people read this crap about us - about me most of all."

Although he often joked about his own success, he also is quoted as having said, "One of the most important reasons for living is to do something - live outside of yourself and put together an idea, an idea that you want to explore and then complete... Awaken your creative sensitivities!"

Jack Palance won a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television on February 8th, 1960, at 6608 Hollywodd Blvd.
