About Jack Palance (1920 - 2006)

American leading man with stage background, who's real name was Walter Palanuik.  Jack Palance made a career of playing character roles in television programs and movies, beginning in 1950.  He specialized in playing villains.

In the 1952 film, SUDDEN FEAR, he plays an actor with a dark, ulterior motive in romancing playwright Joan Crawford, on a trans-American train ride from New York to San Francisco, in SUDDEN FEAR.  He was nominated for Best Actor by the Academy for his role.

The following year, Jack Palance was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, for his 1953 work as an evil gunslinger in SHANE, with Alan Ladd.

Many years later, in 1989, Jack Palance played a crime boss in Tim Burton's BATMAN.  Also in the same year, he played another crime lord in TANGO AND CASH.

Finally, 40 years after he began working as a professional actor, Jack Palance won an Oscar for his performance as cowboy Curly Washburn, in the 1991 comedy City Slickers.  When he went to the stage for his awards, the unusually tall actor [6' 4"] man peered down at host Billy Crystal [5' 7"], and mimicked a line from the film "Billy Crystal... I crap bigger than him." He then got down on the floor and did a number of one handed pushups - at the age of 73.

Palance quipped of entertainment writing, "I'm amazed people read this crap about us - about me most of all."

Although he often joked about his own success, he also is quoted as having said, "One of the most important reasons for living is to do something - live outside of yourself and put together an idea, an idea that you want to explore and then complete... Awaken your creative sensitivities!"
