About Hugh Jackman (1968 – )
Hugh Jackman was born on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Hugh was the youngest of five children, to parents Grace McNeil and Christopher John Jackman, who worked as an accountant. This Englsih family immigrated to Austrailia, shortly before Hugh was born.
Hugh has two older brothers; Ian and Ralph, and two older sisters; Sonya and Zoe. He also has a half sister from his mother's remarriage.
Hugh's mother left the family when Hugh was eight years old, and went back to England; leaving the father to raise the five children. Until his father could compleletely rise successfully to the challenge, Hugh lived with his god parents for eighteen months.
After graduating from the University of Technology Sydney, earning a communications degree with a journalism imphasis, Hugh enrolled in a year long acting program called "The Journey" at the Actors Centre in Sydney. After this year, he attended the Western Austrailian Academy of the Performing Arts.
Not long after, graduating from this academy in 1995, Hugh Jackman was offered a starring role in the ABC TV 10-part prison drama, CORRELLI. In this TV drama, Hugh worked with his future wife, actress Deborra-Lee Furness. They married on April 11th, 1996. After suffering through two miscarriages, they adopted two children: Oscar;(born 2000), and Ava;(born 2005.)
In the X-MEN movies, Hugh Jackman is best known to the public by his performance as Wolverine, thanks to the recommendation of his friend, Russell Crowe, who had turned down the role when it was offered to him.
This role of Wolverine; a character in the Bryan Singer- directed comic book movies: the original X-MEN film and its' popular sequels, made Hugh well-known, pushing him into stardom.
According to the comic books, Wolverine stands 5-feet-3-inches in height. Jackman, who plays Wolverine, stands a whole foot taller than his character.
In the 2004 film, VAN HELSING, Hugh goes after a monster called "The Wolfman". Hugh Jackman accidentally broke an extra's hand during the filming VAN HELSING.
In the 2006 Woody Allen film, SCOOP, Hugh becomes the villain; portraying a charming, handsome yet lethal serial killer, Peter Lyman, in London, England.
Jackman has started his own movie production company, Seed Productions, with friend John Palermo. They delved into television projects, such as the 2006 sereis, AN AUSSIE GOES BARMY,
Not only is Hugh a gifted actor, he also has a fabulous voice, which earned him roles in musicals on stage; (Austrailian production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST & SUNSET BOULEVARD) and in the 1998 Royal National Theatre's production of OKLAHOMA! For his performance in OKLAHOMA!, he was nominated for a 1999 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor.
With Shirley Jones, Jackman sang "People Will Say We're in Love" from "Oklahoma!", when they reprised their respective roles of Curly and Laurie, at the opening of Fox Studios in Sydney.
In 2004, Hugh won the 2004 Theater Wings Best Actor in a Musical Tony Award for his performance as singer Peter Allen in the stage play, THE BOY FROM OX. He was also honored with a Best Actor in a Musical Drama Desk award for this same performance.
His musical ability has also been captured in the film medium. In 2013, for Hugh's performance in the 2012 musical film, LES MISERABLES, Hugh received a Best Actor Oscar nomination, and won a Golden Globe for the same performance.
