About Hector Elizondo (1936 – )

Hector Elizondo was born on December 22, 1936, in New York City, New York, the son of Carmen Medina Reyes and Martin Echevarria Elizondo, both immigrants from Puerto Rico. Hector is a wonderful ethnic mixture of Basque and Puerto Rican descent. He was raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in New York City.

Hector Elizondo is an accomplished guitarist, singer and dancer. In an interview, Hector shared, "I started in 1946 in radio. I was ten years old. I was discovered singing in a school play. Someone was in the audience and it's six degrees of separation."

At the age 10, Hector Elizondo was discovered by the legendary W.C. Handy, and sang for the Frank Murray Boys' Choir.

He attended the High School of the Performing Arts. Hector also attended another high school where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. He was scouted by both the San Francisco Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After graduating from high school, Hector enrolled in City College of New York with the goal of becoming a history teacher, but his girlfriend at the time became pregnant with his child, so he dropped out and went to work full time, to support his new wife and son. The marriage didn't last, and ended in 1957, but Hector won custody of their son, Rodd.

"I'm a parent, especially when you've had the intense parenting the way I had. It's all in the bank. It's all in the great experience bank. Those are your secrets. That's the stuff that makes your work rich, that's what you dip into."

Hector married for a second time in 1962, but it ended in 1963. What also ended in 1963 was Hector's dream of becoming a dancer, when he injured his knee. So, Hector made lemonade out of lemons, and turned to acting.

However, the third time around in serious relationships was the charm, when Hector fell in love with actress Carolee Campbell, and married her in 1969. Also in 1969, Hector Elizondo won an Obie for his leading role in Bruce Jay Friedman's Off-Broadway play, STEAMBATH.

Hector spoke about his wonderful marriage relationship, and finding a career; both of which were a surprise to him. "I love the fact that it starts from there, and you don't know where it's gonna go. Wait long enough - love will find you. Everything's a surprise. When you think you've got it all figured out... as Emerson said, the dice of God are always loaded."

In 1968, Hector entered the world of film and television work, determined to remain proud of his Latino heritage, and not accept roles that are stereotypical and/or demeaning in any way.

In 1984, Hector Elizondo directed A.K.A. PABLO; the first show to utilize seven cameras instead of the usual four. Director Garry Marshall considers Hector to be his "good luck charm", as most movies that Hector is cast in, wind up being successful.

Hector was cast in the 1990 film, PRETTY WOMAN, with both Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Hector won a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Then again in 1999, these three thespians were together again in RUNAWAY BRIDE.

Hector is also known for his performances on the TV series, CHICAGO HOPE;(1994-2000), playing Dr. Phillip Watters for 141 episodes. For his performances, he was nominated 4 times for a Primetime Emmy, and won in 1997, for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Hector has portrayed the same character, Dr. Phillip Watters on three different series:PICKET FENCES;(1992) CHICAGO HOPE;(1994) AND EARLY EDITION;(1996).
