Gregory Hines (1946 - 2003)


Gregory Hines was born in New York, New York on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1946.

Gregory Hines died on August 9, 2003 in Los Angeles, California from liver cancer. Hines is buried in the family plot of Carmela and Michael Truszyk in St Volodymr's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Oakville, Ontario.

Alma, was Gregory Hines' Mother's name. Hines' worked on a farm in his twenties to supplement his tap dancing and acting career.

As a child, Gregory Hines did a tap dancing act with his father Maurice Hines Sr. and his brother Maurice Hines. Gregory Hines had his debut at the tender age of five. At age six Gregory and his brother, Maurice Hines, performed as the HINES KIDS at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Gregory Hines went on to be an excellent tap dancer, and danced in many of his films.

Maurice Hines and Gregory Hines were cast as brothers in Francis Ford Coppola's, THE COTTON CLUB in 1984.  The setting of the film was at the Harlem Club where Gregory Hines Grandmother had performed. Hines' Grandmother was one of the few black women to perform for a whites-only audience in the twenties and thirties.

Pamela Koslow and Gregory Hines were married on April 12, 1981 but were later divorced in the year 2000.  They had two children, Daria Hines in 1971 and Zachary in 1983. In 1968 Gregory Hines married Patricia Panella and he had a stepdaughter named Jessica. They were later divorced.
