About Gloria Grahame (1923 – 1981)

Gloria Grahame was born on November 28, 1923, in Los Angeles, California.

American leading lady, born in Southern California, who's real name was Gloria Hallward. Gloria Grahame was discovered in a student production at Hollywood High School.

Grahame was the daughter of Michael Hallward, an architect, and Jean MacDougall, an actress whose stage name was Jean Grahame. Gloria's mother Jean MacDougall (Grahame) is a stage actress and teacher. Gloria Grahame's mother later became her acting coach. Descended from royalty – King Edward III through Gloria's father's side – Grahame was coached and tutored for the thespian career at an early age.

Gloria was often cast as women with questionable behaviors or in low-brow work but have a heart of gold.

In 1944 Gloria Grahame had her debut in BLONDE FEVER. In 1944, Louis B. Mayer saw Gloria on Broadway and gave her an MGM contract under the name Gloria Grahame.

In 1947 Gloria Grahame was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT. Gloria Grahame's other nomination was for her character in thr 1947 film, CROSSFIRE.

The 1950s was an exceptional decade for Gloria, as she appeared in several more hits, including the epic musical OKLAHOMA!

It was IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE that led Gloria Grahame to the publics eye; her first major public recognition.

Grahame was married four times, once to IN A LONELY PLACE director Nicholas Ray, and later to his son (from a previous marriage) Anthony.

Two different roles gave Gloria Grahame a part using the same first name in the 1964 TV series THE OUTER LIMITS she played Florinda Patten and in THE NESTING playing Florinda Costello.

Gloria Grahame's last two films were MELVIN AND HOWARD (1980) and THE NESTING (1982).

Gloria had four children from three of her four marriages. Her first marriage, to Standley Clements produced no children. Her second marriage to IN A LONELY PLACE director Nicholas Ray prduced a son: Timothy Ray; 1948. Her third marriage to Cy Howard resulted in a daughter, Marianna Paulette;1956.

In 1960, Gloria Grahame was awared a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame for motion pictures at 6522 Hollywood Blvd.

Her last marriage; 1960, that lasted the longest of all her other short 3 to 4 year marriages, was to her stepson, Anthon Ray, who was the son of Nicholas Ray by another relationship.

This union to her stepson, Anthony, created two sons;(Anthony Jr.-1963 and JAmes Ray;1965) as well as a huge scandal that had huge consequences when the marriage was revealed in 1962. The scandal resulted ultimately with her having a mental breakdown requiring shock treatment. Gloria had fell apart because of two consequences of this scandal that hurt her deeply; a weakened acting career, and a vicious custody fight over her daughter, Marianna Paulette Howard with her first husband, Cy Howard.

Her marriage to Anthony Ray lasted through all of her troubles and through to the other side. However, after fourteen years of marriage, they too were divorced in 1974. Also in 1974, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After radiation treatment and a change of habits, the cancer went into remission.

Unfortunately, the cancer came back in 1980, but Gloria ignored it, refusing treatment, which was her right. Instead, she continued working on stage plays, films and television projects in America and the United Kingdom, despite her health issues.

While staying in Liverpool, Gloria went in the hospital to have excess fluid removed, caused by the cancer, and her intestines were nicked by a knife, causing peritonitis. Her two older children, Timothy and Marianna, came to England and flew her home, perhaps hoping to get her better treatment; but she died anyway from the cancer and the peritonitis.

On October 5th, 1981, Gloria Grahame passed away in New York City from cancer with peritonitis at the age of 57.
