About George Segal (1934 – )

George Segal was born on February 13, 1934 in Great Neck, Long Island, New York, the youngest of three sons born to parents Fannie and George Seagal Sr., a malt and hop agent. the brothers also had a sister, but she died as a child before George was born; long before there were antibiotics that could kill the pnemonia disease that took her life.

Though all of his grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, his family wasn't religious, and he was never confirmed in the Jewish faith. His ancestors were socialists, and his grandmother was an anarchist, and ran a boarding house where everyone practiced free love. Fannie rejected this upbringing, and married a Jewish man.

All of Fannie and George Sr.'s children turned out to be productive citizens. George's older brother went into the hops business, and even created new hop varieties. His middle brother became a screenwriter.

George became interested in pursuing show business at the age of nine, after seeing an Alan Ladd film. Music was his endeavor though. George started out on an ukelele, but switched to banjo in high school. In college, George played in a rag-time band.

After college, he was drafted into the army in 1956, and did a two year stint.
George went to the stage, and began his thespian career, which quickly led to Hollywood, in 1960.

In 1966, George Segal had a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Nick in WHO"S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

More than likely, the older generation rememebers George Segal playing the exasperated man that got his tushie kissed by Ruth Gordon. In the 1970 comedy film, WHERE'S POPPA?, George was an attorney with a senile mom, who pulls his pants down and kisses his tush, at the most inopportune times, as well as ruining his love life.

In 1974, George Segal won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance in the 1973 film, A TOUCH OF CLASS.

For the 1975 movie, THE BLACK BIRD, George Segal wore two creative caps: He played the role of Sam Spade Jr. while also being the executive producer.

An accomplished banjo player, George Segal arranged and performed on A TOUCH OF RAGTIME in 1985 and on BASIN STREET with Canadian Brass in 1987.

Having a recurring role, George Segal played Fred Wilde in several episodes of THE NAKED TRUTH in 1995. In 1997, Segal played Doc in the episode, "Girl Buys Soup While Woman Weds Ape!"

A new generation of fans know George Segal as portraying the jerky, self-centered father of Kirstie Alley's baby in the 1989 film, LOOK WHO'S TALKING, which costarred John Travolta. George Segal was also in the sequel, 1993's LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW.

George Segal was on the hit TV series, JUST SHOOT ME!, playing the part of Jack Gallo.

In 1997, Segal was on TRACEY TAKES ON TV series, as Harry Rosenthal.

George Segal was on THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, LARRY SANDERS SHOW, and THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW.
