George Chakiris (1933 - )
American (of Greek Ancestry) leading man and chorus
dancer who was a bright star during the sixties.
George Chakiris made his film debut in musicals
at the age of 12 singing in the chorus in Song
of Love.
During the 50's Chakiris appeared in many Hollywood musicals
such as Gentlemen Prefer Blonds (he was one
of the Marilyn Monroe's dancers) in "Diamonds
are a Girl's Best Friend" and There Is No
Business Like Show Business (1954). George Chakiris's
big breakthough came in 1958 when he got the part
of Riff in the Broadway production of West Side
Story. Chakiris played that character for two years
and then he was offered the part of Bernardo in
the film version in 1961.
George's Other career acomplishments include starring
in films with such stars as Charleton Heston, Lana
Turner and Gene Kelly. In the 1970's and 80's he
focused more on music and television. George Chakiris
has also released several records and has gotten
excellent reviews for his night club acts at Caesar's
Palace and Hurrah's. Recently Chakiris has appeared
in several plays and stage musicals.
