About George Chakiris (1933 – )

George Chakiris is an American (of Greek Ancestry) leading man and chorus dancer who was a bright star during the sixties. George Chakiris was born on September 16th, 1934, in Norwood, Ohio, to Greek immigrant parents.

George Chakiris made his film debut in musicals at the age of 12 singing in the chorus in Song of Love. After graduating from high school, he worked a day job in a department store, to pay for his night time dancing, singing and dramatic lessons.

George Chakiris started his acting /dancing career in Hollywood films. During the 50's Chakiris appeared in many Hollywood musicals as a mostly uncredited performer in such as films as GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDS;(he was one of the Marilyn Monroe's dancers, in the song,"Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"), There Is No Business Like Show Business; (1954), WHITE CHRISTMAS; (1954), BRIGADOON;(1954), and MEET ME IN LAS VEGAS;(1956), a film that he did get an acting credit for, portraying the young groom, George Kerris.

Perhaps wanting to get more credited roles, George wanted to try his luck on Broadway. George Chakiris's big breakthrough came in 1958 when he got the part of Riff in the Broadway production of WEST SIDE STORY. Chakiris played that character for two years and then was cast in the London West End Theatre's stage version of WEST SIDE STORY , again playing the role of Riff, leader of the Jets.

George was offered the part of Bernardo in the WEST SIDE STORY film version in 1961. George won both a Golden Globe and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this film performance in this film of WEST SIDE STORY. No more uncredited roles for him! These awards sent his career to the stars.

George Chakiris was in great demand, especially during the the sixties. George's other career accomplishments include starring in films with such stars as Charleton Heston, Lana Turner and Gene Kelly.

In the 1970's and 80's George focused more on his music and television, appearing as a guest star on such shows as HAWAII FIVE-O, CHIPS, MURDER SHE WROTE and joining the cast of DALLAS.

George Chakiris has also released several records, including: THE GERSHWIN SONG BOOK, MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THESE, and GEORGE CHAKIRIS.

George Chakiris has gotten excellent reviews for his night club acts at Caesar's Palace and Hurrah's.

Chakiris still appeared in several plays and stage musicals as well. His last stage performance was in 1997 in London, England.

As of 1996, George has basically retired and loves to make and design silver jewelry. "I love acting, especially in the theater, and I'd love to look at more opportunities, but the jewelry continues to be the dominant thing for me."
