About Franka Potente (1974 – )

Franka Potente was born on July 22, 1974, in Munster, Germany, the oldest of two children, and the daughter of Hildegard and Dieter Potente. Her father's great grandfather had immigrated from Italy during the 19th century, finding work in Germany as a slate mason who put slate on houses.

Franka shared in an interview why she became an actress. "My background is a small town with no movie theater. So... I always pictured myself onstage. I went to acting school and learned all the skills. I left early because I did my first movie and discovered that I really loved the minimalistic work with the camera."

After finishing high school in Germany, in 1994, Potente enrolled at the Otto Falckenberg School of Performing Arts in Munich. While still in college, Potente began her acting career in her native Germany, where she received critical acclaim and awards. SHe didn't finish her course of work at Otto Falckenberg School of Performing Arts, but instead went to New York to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre.

Franka started her professional film career off with a big bang. In 1995, Her first German film was a comedy, AFTER FIVE IN THE FOREST PRIMEVAL that was originally made for TV. She starred in the role of Anna, a 17 year old girl who runs away from home, seeking freedom, after her birthday party without her parents being there, turns disasterous. She was directed by up and coming film director and writer, Hans-Christian Schmid.

Before AFTER FIVE IN THE FOREST PRIMEVAL could be played on television, the film was screened in October of 1995 at the Hof International Film Festival. The German distributing company Senator Film loved it and thought this film was worthy of playing in theaters, so it was picked up for theatrical distribution. The film opened in German theaters on April 25, 1996. Franka won a 1997 Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actress, at the age of 22 for her performance.

Her trademark is her hair color, which changes with every film. Sometimes after a film, Franka has shaved off her chemically treated hair to get her own hair back.

Long time companion, Tom Tykwer, wrote the title role in the frenetic crime thriller, RUN LOLA RUN; (1998), especially for her, in which Franka portrays the frantic, Lola. During her performance in this film, her day-glo red hair was changed to three different color variations in this film's plot line, that had her character scheming to come up with 100,000 Deutschmarks in twenty minutes. Many claim that this was her national break-through role.

In 2001 she played opposite Johnny Depp in BLOW, as his flight attendant girlfriend, Barbara Buckley, who was also his partner in drug dealing crime.

In 2002, Franka ended her relationship with long-time boyfriend, Tom Tykwer.

Working in the United States, Franka was cast to play the love interest at loose ends, in THE BOURNE IDENTITY; (in 2002) and the sequel, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY; in 2004, having to follow a strict fitness regimen and diet which she found tedious. "I said, 'Wouldn't it be great if Matt Damon's character fell in love with a girl with a real butt?' They were like, 'Yeah sure, sure - here's your personal trainer.'"

Franka Potente speaks fluent French, English and German. She can play the violin, the flute and fence. She also is a singer, and has had four CDs published: BELIEVE (1998), WISH {KOMM ZU MIR}:(1998), EASY DAY; (1999), AND FLY WITH ME; (2001).

In 2011, Franka gave birth to her daughter, Polly Richardson. In the summer of 2012, she married the child's father/ her boyfriend, Derek Richardson.
