About Famke Janssen (1964 – )

Famke Janssen was born on November 5, 1964 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.

Famke Janssen has two sisters: director Antoinette Beumer and actress Marjolein Beumer. While her sisters have blonde hair and blue eyes, Famke is the only brunette. Janssen can speak Dutch, German, English and French.

For the studio tram tour at Disney Parks, Famke Janssen provides the Dutch-language narration.

After studying economics at the University of Amsterdam for a year, Famke figured out that this wasn't for her. After getting a modeling contract in 1984, she moved to the United States, at the age of 20, to become a model for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Victoria's Secret in New York City.

After a time, Famke wanted a break from modeling, and took another look at the possibilities of higher learning. She enrolled in Columbia University, and studied writing and literature, while getting some training in acting from Harold Guskin. In 1992, she graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Famke eventually wound up in Los Angeles, and studied acting with Roy London.

In 1992, Famke Janssen made her film debut with Jeff Goldblum in the movie, FATHER & SONS.

Famke is best known with the older generation for her portrayal of a sex assassin in the 1995 James Bond film, GOLDEN EYE, with Pierce Brosnan. In 1993, while appearing on LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN, in an effort to promote the film, Famke Janssen asked Conan if he would like a taste of her killer moves. Conan replied, "This is what we in the industry call a 'no-brainer'."

Because of Famke Janssen's large shoe size, her shoes had to be specially made for her for the film GOLDENEYE. She wears a size 11 shoe.

In 2002, Famke Janssen was ranked #69 in Stuff magazine's "102 Sexiest Women In The World".

What she didn't like about being in a Bond movie, was being type-cast. Famke shared in an interview, "Looking back, boy, has there ever been a stigma in being a 'Bond Girl.' That's what my mission in life is, just to prove them wrong. That's why I have such an urge to keep going and proving that. It's so silly. What on earth does the way you look have anything to do with whether you can act or not?"

Famke fought back against this stero-typing, and got cast in a variety of interesting, different support roles for some indie film makers: John Irvin's CITY OF INDUSTRY;(1997), Woody Allen's CELEBRITY;(1998), Robert Altman's THE GINERBREAD MAN;(1998), and Ted Demme's MONUMENT AVE.;(1998).

FAMKE Janssen is best known to the younger generation as super-hero, Dr. Jane Grey; a role that she portrayed in all four of the X-MEN films:X-MEN;(2000), X-MEN 2;(2003), X-MEN: THE LAST STAND;(2006), and THE WOLVERINE;(2013). In the fifth X-MEN film, X-Men: Days of Future Past;(2014), she has a cameo role, along with the original cast.

After being cast as Lenore, in the 2008 film, TAKEN, Famke became involved with the efforts to stop human trafficking. Famke became the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime. "As long as corruption exists, human trafficking will likely flourish. I'd like to give something back on an issue that matters to me."

Throughout her adult career, Famke has stepped out of her comfort zone and hasn't been afraid to try new areas of her talent, from the beginning. After leaving her home country for the United States, she experienced modeling, a more satisfying college career and completion, more education in acting and a variety of roles in films. Her experiences have led her to have a very productive life. "I'm a firm believer in taking risks in life, because you'll never get anywhere unless you do, and the more risk involved the greater the outcome - or the worse, but you never know so you've got to go for it."
