About Edward Mulhare (1923 – 1997)

Edward Mulhare was born on April 8, 1923, in Cork, Ireland, in a working class family.

He at first planned to study to be a doctor, but fell in love with acting instead. His first stage productions were in Ireland theatres, including The GATE Theatre in Dublin. By 1951, he became leading man of the Liverpool Repertory Company. Eventually, he moved to London and got on stage in John Gielgud stage productions.

The career-changing, London stage play that Edward was cast in was OTHELLO, that starred Orson Welles, and was directed by Laurence Olivier. His performance inspired Mr. Lerner and his producer, Herman Levin to offer him a very important Broadway role, that opened the way to American stage, film, and television work.

Edward Mulhare and Rex Harrison have often been compared, as they are a like in physical and stage appearance as well as in nationality. Besides resembling each other a lot, both actors can present a commanding presence in all their characters. They were both from the British Isles, and both British-trained thespians.

Apparently, all of these strong similarities were noticed by not only Mr. Levin and Mr. lerner, but by other casting directors as well. When Rex Harrison left the Broadway production of MY FAIR LADY, Mulhare took Harrison's place as Professor Henry Higgins, and remained in this role until the play's run was finished on Broadway; from 1957-1960. He then continued to play Henry Higgins in the tours of MY FAIR LADY, that traveled to Russia, London, and road tours in the 1970s' throughout America. Summer Theatres and Supper Theatres also ran the play.

On television, Edward Mulhare brought a 1947 film version done by Rex Harrison to life again for the television medium, as the ghost of Captain Daniel Gregg in the popular 1968 NBC series, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR. This was an updated version of the original film, taking place in the present day. Edward Mulhare was honored with a Primetime Emmy nomination for his performance.

Edward Mulhare found plenty of stage work on Broadway, appearing in such productions as MARY, MARY, and THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE.

Edward Mulhare was a guest star on the 1957 TV series, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, playing a variety of characters like Courtier, Foppish Lord, Steward, Baron Mornay, Lieutenant, Le Blond, man at arms, Ulf and Soldier.

As a British Diplomat, Edward Mulhare took an uncredited role in the 1967 movie, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

Having around fifty TV guest appearances, Edward Mulhare has been on shows like STUDIO ONE, WHAT'S MY LINE?, THE OUTER LIMITS, DANIEL BOONE, and TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH.

In 1982, Edward Mulhare was on the hit TV series, KNIGHT RIDER, playing the role of Devon Miles.

In 1988, Edward Mulhare became the host of the hit series, SECRETS AND MYSTERIES, and the SECRETS OF THE UNKNOWN.

His last TV appearance was on Season 2, Episode 13 of BAYWATCH NIGHTS, in 1997, right before he died. This episode was dedicated to him.

His last film appearance was in the Matthau/ Lemmon comedy, OUT TO SEA.

On May 24th, 1997, Edward Mulhare passed away in Los Angeles, California, from lung cancer.
