Hopper in HOOSIERS .

About Dennis Hopper (1936 – 2010)

Dennis Hopper was born on May 17, 1936, in Dodge City, Kansas. He lost a long fight with prostrate cancer on May 29, 2010. He was the son of Marjorie Mae and James Millard Hopper.

Hopper is ranked #87 in Empire magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list (October 1997).

Hopper apparently wasn't an easy personality to live with. He had five marriages, and four children from four of his marriages. He did have a good relationship with each of his four children.

Dennis Hopper started his acting career early in life, and was a child star on stage. Besides his early talent in acting, his ability to paint also surfaced at a young age. As an adult, Hopper was also known for his paintings and his photography.

In the 1950s, Dennis Hopper played a series of minor roles, twice in movies featuring James Dean;(REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE;(1955) and GIANT;(1956).) James Dean was a friend, whom Hopper regarded as a mentor. It was James Dean who encouraged Dennis to try photography.

As a young adult, Dennis was a handful, and didn't always work well with authority, perhaps because of his temperament and weak impulse control when he was upset.

When he couldn't control his temper with director, Henry Hathway, Dennis Hopper was blackballed from Hollywood films for eight years;(1958-1965), which is why he turned to the television medium to work as an actor. He guest starred on such series as TWILIGHT ZONE, WAGON TRAIN, THE DEFENDERS, PETTICOAT JUNCTION, GUNSMOKE, CONVOY, BONANZA, COURT MARSHALL AND GUNSMOKE.

His inability to control his mouth as well got him into trouble. Hopper was banned from the MGM lot, because of an incident with the big hauncho, Goldywn B. Mayer himself. Hopper reacted badly after Goldywn B. Mayer made fun of Hopper's desire to play Shakespearean roles.

The film that made him a star, was the low-budget independent effort, EASY RIDER. This huge. 1969 box office hit was a anti-establishment counter-culture story that he wrote with fellow actor, Peter Fonda and writer Terry Southern. They raised 400,000 dollars to make the film, which opened the door to other youth-oriented, stick-it-to-the-man films in Hollywood, as this newly profitable genre was readily accepted and promoted.

Hopper, Fonda, and Southern were nominated for an Academy Award in 1970, for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Material Not Previously Published or Produced for EASY RIDER.

During most of the 1970s, Hopper's career was somewhat compromised by shoddy performances, because of his drug issues, that also ruined two of his marriages. His next big hit was his performance in Francis Ford Coppola's giant hit, APPOCALYPSE NOW;(1979), a powerful movie about the Viet Nam War. He portrayed a pot-smoking photographer.

Lucky for the film industry, Hopper realized what drugs were doing to his ability to act, and he kicked the habit through drug rehabilitation help, and never looked back at that life style. His acting skills bounced back with a vengeance, in such films as RUMBLE FISH;(1983), MY SCIENCE PROJECT;(1985), RIVER'S EDGE;(1986), HOOSIERS;(1986) and BLUE VELVET;(1986).

The awards and kudos for his re-emerging talent began to flow. For the 1987 Academy Awards, Hopper was nominated in the Best Supporting Male Actor category for his performance in HOOSIERS;(1986). Also in 1987, he was nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award for both his outstanding 1986 performances in the films, HOOSIERS and BLUE VELVET. For BLUE VELVET, Hopper did win a BOSTON SOCIETY FILM CRITICS AWARD in 1987.

A line of dialog that he is remembered for among his fans first was said in the film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2; (1986). Hopper says ,"Boys, boys, boys" when he first meets Leatherface and the Sawyer family. Hopper says the same thing when he first meets the heroes in Super Mario Brothers; (1993).

Hopper's last TV series was CRASH;(2008-2009). His last two films that were filmed sometime before he died, and haven't been released yet, are THE LAST FILM FESTIVAL, and THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD.
