About Claire Trevor (1909 – 2000)

Claire Trevor was born to French and Irish parents in Brooklyn, New York.  Claire is known as the "Queen of Film Noir" for her many "bad girl" roles in pictures of that genre. Claire brings a complexity and three dimensionality to her portrayals.

As a child, this American character actress started on the stage. Claire Trevor got her training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Columbia University.

Her first role of note was the dance hall girl, Dallas, in the 1939 John Ford movie, STAGECOACH, with John Wayne.

In the 1944 film noir classic MURDER MY SWEET, Claire played Velma Valento, who was a mysterious femme fatale and former girlfriend of a recently released ex-con. This less than desirable boyfriend hires hard-boiled Detective Philip Marlowe; (played by Dick Powell) to track her down, leading Marlowe into a world of blackmailers and murderers.

In John Huston's KEY LARGO, Claire played Gayle Dawn; the boozy, abused girlfriend of gangster Johnny Rocco, (played by Edward G. Robinson). Rocco takes over a hotel during a hurricane and meets his match in hotel guest, detective Frank McCloud, who is played by Humphrey Bogart.

Claire Trevor played again with John Wayne, in THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY; (1954), an airplane disaster movie that would later serve as the inspiration for the comedy spoof, AIRPLANE.

Claire Trevor also won an Emmy for her distinguished performance in the TV version of DODSWORTH.
