Anthony Quayle was born on September 7, 1913
in Ainsdale, Southport, Lancashire, England. On October 20,
1989 Anthony Quayle passed way in London, England from liver
cancer.
Sometimes Anthony Quayle is credited as Sir Anthony
Quayle. His birth name is John Anthony Quayle and he went
by the nickname Tony.
To some people it may be his voice that is more
recognized as he was the narrator for several shows including
ISLAND UNKNOWN in 1969, and for the TV series REACHING FOR
THE SKIES in 1987. Although his face was seen in several TV
series as well including MASADA it was a TV miniseries in 1981 Quayle
played Rubrius Gallus also in 1981 another mini series was
THE MANIONS OF AMERICA and he played Lord Montgomery.
Anthony Quayle is the father of actress Jenny
Quayle.
Trying to stick with stage work, Anthony Quayle
was primarily acting and directing until 1948, when he took
on the role of Marcellus in Laurence Olivier's film adaptation
of HAMLET.
Quayle was a British army Major during WW2 and then
played one in THE
GUNS OF NAVARONE.
In 1970 we heard Anthony Quayle's fabulous voice
as he narrated THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII, a TV
mini series. It was not until 1979 that we saw him play Sir
John Falstaff in HENRY IV in part 1 and 2. This series was
also known as THE COMPLETE DRAMATIC WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE:
HENRY IV.
For his role in TAMBURLAINE THE GREAT, Anthony
Quayle was nominated for Broadway's 1956 Tony Award.
Films about the famous Sherlock Holmes, seem
to have been Anthony Quayle's forte, he has appeared in two
films about the detective Sherlock Holmes and the just as
famous killer Jack the Ripper. In 1965 A STUDY IN TERROR and
in 1979 MURDER BY DECREE.
For Anthony Quayle's portrayal of Cardinal Wolsey
he earned an Academy Award nomination in ANNE OF THE THOUSAND
DAY in 1969.
Not only a great actor Anthony Quayle also wrote
two books, Eight Hours From England and On Such a Night.
Trying to get his foot in the door Anthony Quayle
had small roles that were uncredited. In 1938 playing Eliza's
Hairdresser in PYGMALION and in 1935 dictating a letter in
