Anglea Brigid Lansbury was born in London, England, on October
16, 1925.
During WW2 Lansbury left England and found herself signing
an acting contract with MGM at age 17.
In her very first film, "Gaslight" (1944), she
gave a brilliant performance that landed her an Academy Award
for Best Actress nomination. The following year and only two
films later she would stun audiences again with her performance
in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1945); also an
Academy Award nominated (Best Supporting Actress) performance.
That year she married her first husband, Richard Cromwell.
They were divorced the next year; rumor has it that Cromwell
was allegedly gay, a fact unknown to his bride to be until
after their union. Lansbury found marital bliss however with
her second husband Peter Shaw. The two were married in 1949
and remained together until his death in 2003. They have two
children.
Throughout Angela's career she blazed the Broadway stage,
winning four Tony awards in only sixteen years. In the 1980’s
Angela Lansbury became a household name, known widely as Jessica
Fletcher of the popular television series, “Murder, She Wrote.”
Although she was nominated nearly annually for an Emmy for
her performance as Jessica Fletcher she never managed to snag
the honor.
One of Angela Lansbury's most memorable roles was in 1955's
THE COURT
JESTER.
